C-Mac: Yankees' game five loss hurts as much as any in lifetime of baseball fandom

The Yankees seemed to be cruising towards becoming the first team in World Series history to force a game six after falling behind 3-0 in the series, at least until a blunder-filled fifth inning erased a 5-0 lead and all the good vibes permeating through the Bronx.

What resulted was a 7-6 loss that ended the season and left fans wondering what could have been, as a potential historic comeback would have been halfway complete had the Bombers not tripped over their own feet in one of the most disastrous innings ever seen in a World Series.

While the pain and frustration was still fresh just hours after the final out was recorded, Chris McMonigle believed it was one of the most painful losses he has endured as a fan.

“I know they still had a ton to accomplish after last night, even if they went to LA,” C-Mac said. “So when you think about some of the other losses, you might say ‘It wasn’t like ’01 where they were outs away with Mariano on the mound,’ and it wasn’t like ’04, watching it fall apart slowly. But I gotta tell you, this one, and maybe it’s the immediacy bias, it hurts as much as any.”

As C-Mac said, the Yankees would have still had to win two games on the road after using their ace in Gerrit Cole in game five, but there still would have been the chance, and there still would have been days of excitement and anticipation leading into game six. Instead, there is just shock and frustration at the way the season ended.

“In the moment, I can’t remember feeling more sick to my stomach, more angry, frustrated, sad,” C-Mac said. “It’s as difficult a loss for Yankee fans as any in my lifetime.

“To watch them throw this away...the game started exactly how they needed to. You could not have started this game any better.”
