C-Mac has long been a big proponent of the Yankees making a trade for Juan Soto, and one of the reasons he wants to see it happen is because of his fear that the team in Queens would beat the Yanks in a free agent big for the star outfielder.
“I don’t know what’s gonna happen with Juan Soto…he could get traded somewhere, they offer him a crazy contract, and nobody ever has a chance,” C-Mac said. “But with Scott Boras as his agent, there’s a good chance he hits free agency, and if the Mets want him, they got him.”
Armed with Steve Cohen, the richest owner in the sport, the Mets can place the highest bid for any player they covet. Meanwhile, C-Mac doesn’t trust Hal Steinbrenner to be willing to do the same. So, if the Yankees can trade for Soto, he wants to see that happen, then sign him to an extension so he never sees free agency. But if it gets to free agency, it will be hard to beat the Mets.
“The Mets have the deepest pockets in baseball,” C-Mac said. “I don’t know if Steinbrenner is willing to win that bidding war. I don’t know if the shareholders who are clamoring about the debt in that building are willing to get into that bidding war.”
