Cam Schlittler will NOT pitch in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Sunday morning.
Schlittler pitched 6 2/3 innings in Saturday’s Yankees win over Washington and would have been on his usual between-starts throw day for Tuesday’s game, but Boone said Schlittler made the decision because he was ‘a little apprehensive’ about ramping it up in the All-Star Game.
“Just feels like, on his recovery day, to go back out there throwing 100 miles an hour is something that he felt a little apprehensive about,” Boone said before Sunday’s first-half finale at Nationals Park. “So certainly support that decision. Obviously he understands what’s at stake here in the second half for us and for him. I’m certainly supportive of his decision.”
Schlittler finished the first half with a 2.05 ERA, best in the American League, and had a strong case to be named the starter for the All-Star Game – and Boone made sure his young righty was sure about the decision during their discussion.
"One of the things I asked him was, 'Have you given this a lot of thought, consideration?' And he has,” Boone said. “I feel good about that. He feels good. He feels normal today post-outing. I just wanted him to be thoughtful in how he came to that decision, and certainly we support it wholeheartedly."
Schlittler will still attend the game, and has a lot of family headed to Philadelphia, but imtimated Saturday he was not too worried about playing in the game itself.
[It would] be a cool experience, but I'm not too worried about it,” Schlittler said. “I've got more things to worry about in terms of just this team and how we've been playing and how it's been in the last couple of days.”
