The Yankees got some good news for their pitching depth on Monday: RHP Clarke Schmidt officially began a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League, throwing three scoreless innings in the FCL Yankees' 4-3 win over the FCL Tigers West.
Schmidt has missed the entire season after suffering a common flexor tendon strain in his right forearm early in spring training, and he threw two innings in a simulated game last week as his last pre-rehab tune-up.
In the FCL outing, Schmidt faced the minimum nine batters, allowing just one hit (a leadoff single that was erased on a double play) and striking out five.
The outing begins Schmidt's 30-day rehab clock, which means the Yankees will, barring a setback, have to activate him off the 60-day IL by August 25.
