Corey Kluber could throw bullpen session next week in big step toward return

Corey Kluber may take a big step towards making his Yankee return, as manager Aaron Boone said the righty could throw a bullpen session on Friday.

It would be Kluber’s first time throwing off a mound since suffering a shoulder injury on May 25.

Kluber left that May 25 start after just three innings with shoulder tightness, and further tests revealed a shoulder strain, leading to a trip to the 60-day IL. Kluber missed extended time earlier in his career with a shoulder injury, but confidently said earlier this month that he would be back this season.

Kluber was throwing on flat ground from 90 feet earlier in July, and Friday would be the next step in his long road to a return.

The Yankee rotation has fallen off significantly since Kluber’s injury, with Gerrit Cole and Domingo German both struggling to find consistency, and Kluber’s spot has been filled by short starts from Mike King or Nestor Cortes Jr., both of whom are currently on the IL (King with a bruised finger, Cortes on the COVID list).

There is still no timetable for Kluber’s return.

Luis Severino would be another big boost to the rotation, and the righty was supposed to throw a live batting practice session on Saturday, but it was called off because of the rainy weather. Severino is looking to go back on a rehab assignment after injuring his groin in a rehab start on his road back from Tommy John surgery.
