Corey Kluber, Domingo German to make spring debuts this week

Corey Kluber is set to make his Yankee debut this week, while Domingo German will follow shortly after in what will be his first time facing MLB hitters since September of 2019.

Aaron Boone told reporters on Tuesday that Kluber, who signed with the Yankees this offseason on a one-year, $11 million deal, will start for the Yanks on Wednesday in their spring training game against the Blue Jays. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Kluber, a two-time Cy Young winner, will be looking to complete his first healthy season since 2018, and will be on the mound in game action for the first time since July 26 of last year, when he lasted just one inning in what was his only appearance of the season. He managed just 35.2 innings in 2019 after leading the league with 215.0 innings in 2018.

After Deivi Garcia makes his first start and first case for a spot in the Opening Day rotation on Thursday, German will throw on Friday, as he also looks to win a spot in the back end of the rotation. German last threw to big league hitters on Sept. 18, 2019, before a domestic violence incident at a charity event led to an eventual 81-game suspension, which sidelined the 28-year-old for all of 2020. The Yanks play the Tigers on Friday at 1:05 p.m.

Also making their return this week is third baseman Gio Urshela, who Aaron Boone said would play in Thursday’s game in what will be his first appearance since the end of last season, before he underwent surgery to remove a bone chip in his elbow.
