Could Yankee ownership take fan reaction into account when determining the fates of Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone?
Boomer Esiason believes it’s certainly possible, and has recent local examples to prove it.
“I can think of three owners of sports teams in New York who have gone down this road in the last five years,” Boomer said. “No. 1, Christopher Johnson when they decided to get rid of Todd Bowles and Peyton Manning recommended hiring Adam Gase…Christopher reacted to the fans and decided to make a change.
“The other example is John Mara. He says he reads basically everything that comes across his desk and listens to the fans, he reads his emails and writes letters…the other one would be Jim Dolan as owner of the Rangers. When Tom Wilson rag-dolled Artemi Panarin…he came in and cleaned house when the season was over, shocking to all of us. I think he responded to the fans’ ire because it was an embarrassing loss.”
Gio acknowledged the likely fan impact that those decisions had, but still finds it hard to imagine such a franchise-altering decision, especially when it comes to one of the most recognizable sports franchises in the world, coming down to a fan consensus.
“You’re telling me that Hal Steinbrenner has now got his ear to the ground and is listening for fan vitriol to decide whether Brian Cashman is coming back or not?” Gio said. “Where would he be hearing that from?”
“He’s gonna hear it from Randy Levine,” Boomer replied. “The people working here in New York, everyday fans who are not renewing their season tickets.”
