Craig dumbfounded by Giancarlo Stanton injury: 'A hamstring pull walking into second base?'

Giancarlo Stanton has landed on the IL with a hamstring strain that will likely sideline the oft-injured slugger for at least 4-6 weeks.

Stanton grabbed at his hamstring in Sunday’s series finale against the Twins after pulling into second for a double, and Craig couldn’t get past how Stanton hurt himself by doing such a non-taxing act.

“He was not running at any point of getting to second base,” Craig said. “He was jogging a bit, but he wasn’t in an all-out sprint, and frankly, he should have been on third base if he was.

“It’s his body, it’s not him, it’s not like you did it to yourself. But you’re lollygagging to second base, and that’s how you hurt yourself?”

Craig has long been critical of Stanton’s inability to stay in the lineup throughout his Yankee tenure, and sure enough, 2023 will be another season in which the former MVP misses extended time due to a lower body injury.

“You’re a professional athlete in great shape,” Craig said. “You have a hamstring pull walking into second base?”
