Didn’t take one of the released Yankees minor-league veterans long to find work.
The Chicago Cubs have signed catcher Robinson Chirinos to a major-league deal, and he was active for Monday night’s game against Philadelphia, going 0-for-1 as a defensive replacement late in Chicago’s 13-3 loss to the Phillies.
Chirinos, 37, was officially released from his minor-league deal with the Yankees on Sunday, after slashing .278/.422/.566 with three home runs at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He played just 13 games around the fractured wrist suffered in spring training and a stint on the inactive list to play in the Olympic qualifiers for Venezuela.
In now parts of 10 MLB seasons with the Rays, Rangers, Mets, Astros, and Cubs, Chirinos is a .231 career hitter in 603 games.
