After Domingo German tossed the fourth perfect game in Yankees history, what better perspective to hear from than the last Yankee to throw a perfecto?

Fortunately, David Cone was awake after the historic game out in Oakland and joined the YES Network’s postgame show after German’s final out.

“This was great to follow,” Cone said. “He was so efficient the whole time...to me, this is a real gift for the organization.”

Cone tagged David Wells, also a member of the exclusive perfect game club, on Twitter late in the game to see if he was awake, then congratulated German via social media after the final out was recorded, asking the Yankee righty for his autograph.

The former Yankee righty, who was perfect against the Expos in 1999, said German was on top of his game all night, which showed in his nine strikeouts and just 99 pitches to go the distance.

“I think the battle is, is you just want to stay in this sort of relentless attack mode,” Cone said. “I know that’s what I thought…you can’t take your foot off the gas pedal, so to speak. He did a great job of that. He really did.”

Now, German gets to enjoy the spoils of making baseball history forever, a luxury that Cone has been able to enjoy over the years.

“He and Kyle [Higashioka] will be signing autographs for life,” Cone said. “And the further they get from it, the more they’re going to appreciate it.”
