Anthony Volpe is set to become the youngest Yankees Opening Day shortstop since Derek Jeter, and The Captain offered his congratulations on Wednesday.
“Congratulations, Anthony Volpe,” Jeter tweeted. “There’s nothing like playing shortstop for the New York Yankees.”
Jeter, of course, would know. When he made his own Opening Day start as an unproven youngster in 1996, he crushed a home run in Cleveland and made a fantastic over-the-shoulder catch. From there, he never stopped, winning Rookie of the Year and a World Series before keeping that starting shortstop job for 19 straight seasons.
Volpe, 21, will look to begin a similar type of pinstriped tenure when he takes the field for the first time in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon.
