Derek Jeter explains why Yankee fans are best in the world ahead of Bronx return

Derek Jeter will be making his first appearance at Yankee Stadium in five years on Friday night when the Bombers honor him for his Hall of Fame induction, and the Yankee fans will be on their feet to salute the franchise legend.

In Jeter’s opinion, he will be hearing cheers from the best fans in the world of sports.

Jeter has made that declaration many times throughout his illustrious 20-year career and into retirement, and told Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network why he believes that so strongly.

“They watch,” Jeter said. “They pay attention. It means something to them.

“I remember in 1998, we had basically won the division in April and we had a little bad streak at the end of the year. I’m walking down the streets and people are yelling at me telling me we better turn it around. We won 125 games that year.”

It was one of many memorable seasons in New York for Jeter, who will be back in the Bronx for the first time since his iconic No. 2 was retired in 2017. The fans have World Series aspirations for this year’s group, despite struggling so badly since the All-Star break, but those aspirations are what separates Yankee fans from the rest.

“They have high expectations,” Jeter said. “I think that brings out the best in people.”
