Devin Williams reaches new low as nightmare debut season with Yankees continues

Devin Williams once again faltered on Tuesday night, allowing two runs while walking two batters in 0.2 innings of work to take the loss after coming into the game in a scoreless tie in the eighth.

The implosion came 24 hours after allowing a game-tying home run to the badly struggling Joc Pederson in the ninth inning of Monday’s series opener in Texas, marking the third blown save of the year for Williams.

The past two games have continued what has been a dreadful debut season with the Yanks, as Williams has now allowed at least one earned run in each of his last four appearances, and six of his last eight. His ERA on the year has ballooned to 5.44, more than double his career ERA of 2.39.

Just how bad has Williams been in comparison to his career as a whole? Tuesday night marked the 25th and 26th earned runs on the year, which matches the amount he allowed in his previous three seasons in Milwaukee. From 2022 through 2024, Williams allowed 26 earned runs in 141 innings. He has reached that mark in just 43 innings with the Yanks.

Previously one of the best closers in baseball, the addition of Williams was seen as one that gave the Yanks a formidable back of the bullpen with Luke Weaver also in the fold. Instead, Williams lost his closer role early in the season, and the Yanks needed to add three relievers at the trade deadline to aid what has been a dreadful bullpen, a far cry from previous years when the relievers were one of the team’s biggest strength.
