Dillon Lawson is out as the Yankees hitting coach, but C-Mac says the only reason why Brian Cashman’s first in-season firing of a head coach is notable is because the Yanks will not be making his replacement an internal one.
“Is it his fault? I’ve never been one to give praise to the hitting coach, and I’m not gonna tell you it’s his fault,” C-Mac said. “But has he done a good enough job where he can’t lose it? Of course not. Will this make significant change? I didn’t think so at all until I heard they’re gonna go outside the organization…because whatever you think of Dillon Lawson, he’s a product of the Yankee design.
“At least they’re hiring outside the organization, which acknowledges that Brian Cashman realizes there’s a problem…he realizes this nonsense can’t go on anymore, and he can’t fire the players.”
Still, C-Mac doesn’t see a new hitting coach bringing about big change to a lineup that has been dormant since Aaron Judge went on the IL, as the main culprits behind the team’s offensive struggles has been the lack of production from proven veterans who have suddenly seemed to decline at a rapid rate.
“I don’t blame him for Anthony Rizzo becoming an absolute dud the second Aaron Judge goes down, or Giancaro Stanton being in a month-long funk after an injury,” C-Mac said. “We’ve seen that since 2018…I’m not gonna blame him for The Machine being broken. DJ LeMahieu is broken.
“I don’t think this is gonna dramatically change the main issues from the main guys…I don’t know what a new hitting coach is gonna do for it, but it can’t hurt. The entire lineup, top to bottom, has had a terrible approach all year.”
