The Yankees will be without their starting third baseman when the season opens on Thursday, as Brian Cashman told reporters that DJ LeMahieu will begin the season on the IL.
LeMahieu, who was expected to be the yankees’ leadoff hitter to begin the 2024 season, fouled a ball off his foot in spring training action, and while he had resumed fielding work, Cashman said his recovery wasn’t progressing quickly enough to get him back in game action by Thursday in Houston.
The Yanks had been encouraged by LeMahieu’s production in spring training, especially coming off a strong second half to the 2023 season.
The first half of that season, and the second half of the 2022 season, were a struggle for the 35-year-old due to a right foot injury.
With LeMahieu out, Oswaldo Cabrera will likely get the Opening Day start at the hot corner.
