Twins manager tossed after Domingo German stays in game following lengthy substance check

Domingo German began Saturday afternoon looking like a completely different pitcher than the one that walked a career high five batters in his previous start.

The righty struck out a career high 10 batters through his first five innings of work, not allowing a baserunner in that span, but became the center of some controversy after the third inning, when the umpires conducted a routine banned substance check that turned lengthy, and then was checked again as he came out for the top of the fourth.

Whatever the umpires thought was on German’s hands (they appeared to tell him he needed to wash his hands), it wasn’t enough for the umpires to throw him out, though Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was tossed soon after.

After German was allowed to return to the mound and pitch, Baldelli came out looking for clarity, and was eventually thrown out for arguing that German wasn’t ejected.

If German did indeed wash his hands off, it didn’t seem to have any impact immediately after, as he pitched two other scoreless frames after Baldelli was tossed.
