The Astros took down the Twins in game four of the ALDS on Wednesday night, clinching a remarkable seventh straight trip to the ALCS, a run that began when they took down the Yankees in game seven in 2017.
Evan says the Astros, who have been a thorn in the Yankees’ side since the 2015 Wild Card Game, are now a nuisance for the Bombers’ last run of glory.
“First they beat your modern Yankees, and now, they’re coming for the dynasty’s ass,” Evan said. “This is a baseball team that won a World Series in 2017, got back to the ALCS in 2018, back to a World Series in 2019…back to the World Series in 2021, back to the World Series in 2022, won it, and now, they could go back again.
“They are, right now, writing a script that is gonna match, and maybe surpass, the ‘90s Yankees.”
As of now, the Astros have two championships (’17 and ’22), four pennants (’17, ’19, ’21, and ’22), and seven trips to the ALCS in seven years. In a nine-year span from 1996-2004, the Yankees won four championships, six pennants, and went to the ALCS seven times. The titles are what matter most, so the Astros have some work to do in that department. But Evan says the Astros may already have the more impressive run, given the circumstances.
“I have great respect for Bernie, Jeets, O’Neill, and Joe Torre,” Evan said. “But when you think about payroll disparity, manager turnover, turnover in roster, I’d even argue that what the Astros have accomplished to this moment is more impressive than what the late 90s Yankees did.”
