Evan Gattis is the source of major heartbreak for Yankee fans, as the former Astros catcher’s go-ahead home run in game seven of the 2017 ALCS proved to be the eventual game winner, and the Yanks haven’t gotten closer to a World Series berth since.
Houston went on to win that World Series, a championship that is now heavily debated and criticized in the wake of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal that rocked Major League Baseball after it was revealed following the 2019 season.
This past weekend, Gattis ripped open that wound for Yankee fans during a bizarre Twitter rant that included questioning racism, and eventually responding to a fan that he indeed was told what pitch was coming from CC Sabathia before hitting that home run in Houston in game seven.
A Twitter user asked Gattis if the pitch he took deep off Sabathia the result of a “trash can bang,” to which Gattis replied, “Yes, I’m pretty sure. Back door cutter slider.”
The pitch indeed was a back door slider, one that hung over the outer half and Gattis crushed to left center. Of course, the Yankees couldn’t generate any offense in game seven, or during any road game that series, so the homer from Gattis, fair or not, may not have directly been responsible for the series’ outcome.
Another Twitter user separately asked Gattis if he knew what pitch was coming from Sabathia in game seven, to which Gattis replied, “Yes.”
