Evan: Anthony Volpe 'average' defensively, could see position change if Oswald Peraza performs

Anthony Volpe continues to heat up at the plate for the Yankees, hitting a big home run on Thursday night to help the Bombers take three out of four from the rival Blue Jays in Toronto.

But while Volpe’s bat continues to come around, Evan still has concerns about the prized prospect’s defensive staying power at shortstop.

“His defense has been shaky,” Evan said. “We’ve had a month and a half to watch him every single day…he’s OK defensively at shortstop. I don’t think he’s great, I don’t think he’s bad. I don’t think you have to take him off shortstop like Gleyber Torres.”

With fellow prized prospect Oswald Peraza nearing a return from the IL, Evan says he would like to get a look at Peraza at short, as by all accounts, he is the superior defender.

“If Oswald Peraza comes back and shows he can hit enough to play every single day, then we’re talking about a position change,” Evan said. “In the moments I’ve watched him, he’s better defensively, and scouts have said he’s better defensively.”

Per Statcast, Volpe is 28th among shortstops in outs above average, and while he is still very early in his big league career, Evan believes it has been enough of a sample size.

“A month and a half, I’ve been watching him,” Evan said. “He’s average defensively.”
