Angel Hernandez was once again in the news for the wrong reasons on Sunday, as multiple controversial calls led to fans ripping the umpire on social media, and the Yankees, mainly Gleyber Torres, in disbelief.
Torres thought the pitch clock would reset after Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis stepped off the mound, but Hernandez allowed Francis to step right back on and begin his windup in the same motion, then rang up Torres on a called third strike that seemed to be well above the zone.
Evan, watching from home, was far from surprised given who made the call.
“Angel Hernandez, you know him as the worst umpire in the history of baseball, and really, the worst human being at their job in the history of the world,” Evan said. “When he was the home plate umpire for Sunday’s game, my reaction was, ‘He’ll do something and people will bitch about it.’
“You know how a dog goes to mark their spot? It was almost like Angel Hernandez…lifted his leg up and said ‘I gotta mark my spot.’”
Fans at Yankee Stadium shouted jeers and chants towards Hernandez specifically, and given his performance behind the plate, Evan said it was absolutely warranted.
“I have to commend the Yankee fan for standing up,” Evan said.
