Evan praised the Yankees getting utility man Jon Berti from the Marlins in a three-team trade on Wednesday, and not just because he is relieved to have him out of the NL East.
“Jon Berti is a pain in the ass Met killer,” Evan said. “I’m happy I don’t have to face him anymore.”
Berti led the league in steals in 2022, was just above an average hitter in 2023, and is one of the more versatile infielders in the game. Given the Yankees’ question marks in the wake of DJ LeMahieu’s injury, Evan says Berti is a perfect acquisition.
“He can play anywhere in the infield, but really, he can play third base,” Evan said.
“I’d start him over Oswaldo [Cabrera] at this point, especially on Opening Day against the lefty. Oswaldo is a switch hitter who can’t bat right handed right now…so Jon Berti should start Opening Day against Framber Valdez.
“He’s a good little versatile player, and you got him for a song. He makes the Yankee bench deeper. Even when DJ is healthy, that’s a really good bench piece to have.”
