As the Yankees seek more clarity on Gerrit Cole’s elbow, Evan says Yankee fans should sign up for a potential outcome of their ace missing multiple months, as it beats the disastrous alternative.
“If you get the news in the next 48 hours that at least tell you ‘We figured it out, it’s not great, but we can have this guy back at some point during the 2024 season,’ I promise you, the Yankees are good enough to survive it,” Evan said. “If you get him back in July, August, or September, he can still make the ultimate impact in getting you where you need to go.”
The Yankees don’t expect to provide an update for a few days, which has Evan and Tiki worried that there may be multiple opinions needed for a potentially complicated issue. For Evan, as long as it isn’t season ending, it could be an outcome that Yankee fans can get behind.
“I’m at the point where if I’m a Yankee fan…just give me the hope and belief he can come back,” Evan said. “Forget May 1…there could always be a setback, but the idea that he can come back in a few months, the Yankees are good enough to survive it, and Gerrit Cole is good enough to merely walk through the door in the middle of July and - I hate to use this phrase - be the trade deadline acquisition you need upon returning from the IL.”
