Aaron Boone told reporters on Monday that DJ LeMahieu is dealing with a “pretty significant bone bruise” after fouling a ball off his foot in spring training action, and that was enough for Evan to assume that LeMahieu will be the latest key contributor for the Yankees who won’t be in uniform when the season opens next week.
“That’s code for, ‘He’s not gonna be ready for Opening Day,’” Evan said.
If that is indeed the case, the fill-ins at third base look bleak, and suddenly, the expected leadoff hitter will be on the shelf, while Aaron Judge’s status is in doubt as he continues to sit with an abs issue.
“Enough of this spring training. Put guys in bubble wrap,” Evan said. “If DJ LeMahieu is out and not available to be ready on Opening Day, are we talking about Jorbit Vivas starting at third base, or Oswaldo Cabrera? I can’t think of anybody else.
“Can you just get to Opening Day without any more injuries?”
