Evan: Juan Soto will clearly go to highest bidder in free agency
After listening to Juan Soto’s comments before Monday’s Home Run Derby, Evan is convinced of what he has believed since the Yankees made the blockbuster trade for the pending free agent this past offseason.
Soto is going to let money talk this offseason in free agency.
“He is a highest-bidder kind of guy,” Evan said. “While the Yankees were smart for trading for him, because it gives them a better chance of winning this season, I wasn’t convinced it was gonna give the Yankees some kind of home-field advantage.
“When you turn down the money he turned down from Washington a few years ago, you have Scott Boras as your agent, and you’re one year away from free agency, you’re gonna want to go to free agency and try to break the bank.”
Soto told reporters that he isn’t sure whether anything that happens with the Yankees this season will play a role in where he signs in the winter, and Evan says it is clear that even if the Yanks end their title drought, Soto will still sign wherever he gets the highest offer.
“What I heard there was, ‘it’s gonna have nothing to do with it,’” Evan said. “Juan Soto - and I have no issue with this - he’s making it clear that he’s gonna want every dime.”
