Former Yankee Sergio Mitre sentenced to 40-60 years for murder of toddler

Former Yankees pitcher Sergio Mitre was found guilty and sentenced to 40-60 years in prison for the rape and murder of a nearly two-year-old infant, who was the daughter of his girlfriend at the time.

Mitre was found guilty on Wednesday in Mexico for the despicable act that occurred in Mexico in July of 2020.

When Mitre was arrested in 2020, prosecutors said the infant bled to death due to injuries suffered in her abdomen and back. The mother, Liliana Ines, reportedly took the child to a clinic, and eventually a Red Cross clinic, before she was rushed to a hospital before dying at just 22 months old.

Mitre had been arrested for domestic assault of a romantic partner nearly a year before the incident, and paid a fine to avoid prison time. He went on to finish his final season in pro baseball shortly after being set free.

Mitre pitched a total of three seasons with the Yankees, his first coming in 2009, when he was left off the playoff roster after pitching to a 6.79 ERA over 51.2 innings. In 2010, he logged a 3.33 ERA over 54 innings, and made just four appearances for the team in 2011, his last season in the major leagues.

The righty made three playoff appearances for New York, all in the 2010 ALCS. He was tagged for three earned runs in one inning of work in game four.
