Gerrit Cole made waves on social media during Tuesday night’s start, when he stared down Jose Caballero after striking him out with a 98 mph fastball, then wagged his finger, Dikembe Mutombo style, towards the Mariners dugout as he walked off the field in the seventh.

Turns out, Cole was wagging his finger at Seattle manager Scott Servais, who he said was doing the same to him after Cole seemed to be annoyed at Caballero in between pitches, as Cabellero let the pitch clock wind down before stepping back in the box after calling a timeout, and flipped his bat high in the air after fouling off a pitch.

“Their manager had some choice words for me coming off the field,” Cole said. “He was wagging his finger at me, so I wagged my finger at him.”

Cole’s finger wag wound up being the highlight of a brilliant start in which he allowed just one run over 7.1 innings of work, once again getting the Yankees back in the win column, as New York is now a perfect 7-0 on the season after a loss when Cole takes the mound.
