If the Yankees need a sacrificial lamb at the end of what will be their worst season in over 30 years, who will be the one to get axed?
Gio says it would be the manager, but still doesn’t believe that will happen unless the directive comes from the very top.
“It’s probably going to be Aaron Boone,” Gio said. “I still think if Brian Cashman is there and solely making the decisions…he’s going to keep Aaron Boone there. And that’s not going to make a difference.”
Still, Gio doesn’t believe that will address the greater concern for the Yankees, and nothing will truly change within the organization until the GM leaves, which won’t happen until he decides himself to move on.
Or, if Cashman stays, he will have to prove he can change his approach to roster construction and develop young talent and build a consistent and healthy pitching staff.
“That’s asking a lot for the Brian Cashman regime, because he hasn’t been able to do that,” Gio said. “He hasn’t been able to develop the young hitters, and outside of Gerrit Cole, he hasn’t been able to build a pitching staff.
“Brian Cashman is going to be here until he doesn’t want to be here…it’s just not gonna happen. Does he change his philosophy?”
