The Yankees are not scoring runs, and looking at the back half of their lineup, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
The Yanks are battling injuries, but in the eyes of Gio, their current offensive predicament is a direct result of the front office not aggressively pursuing glaring needs this past offseason.
That inaction was the latest trend of the Yankees moving away from what made them the championship-hungry juggernaut they were in years past.
“When they trot out a back end of the lineup that includes Willie Calhoun, Franchy Cordero, Jose Trevino, and Aaron Hicks…that’s the Yankees?” Gio said. “I don’t know how you’re not frustrated. I don’t know exactly what their goal is.
“I understand it’s one month of baseball, but this is not the way the Yankees started last year, and it’s not the way the Yankees should ever be. When you think about these teams that the Yankees lose to, it’s offenses that are consistent. The Astros, consistent offense throughout the year and in the postseason. That’s been a big problem for them the last couple years.”
Gio pointed to the Mets, who can take comfort in the fact that their owner will do whatever is necessary to contend. That doesn’t feel like something Yankee fans can feel nowadays, which is very out of character and nothing like the culture that Steve Cohen has built in Queens.
“Do the Yankees still think like that?” Gio said. “After they signed Aaron Judge, it was like ‘OK, we’ll get a pitcher we got Rodon,’ but all these things that weren’t working last year, they brought them all back!”
