The Yankees suffered arguably their worst loss of the season on Sunday, adding to the long list of legitimate candidates for that title.
After the typically dominant Clay Holmes imploded in a five-run ninth inning for the Marlins, resulting in a walk-off loss, Gio came in on Monday ready to declare the 2023 Yankees dead in the water.
“They’re dead, man. It’s over,” Gio said. “The season is over. We’re spinning our wheels in the mud talking about these details. It doesn’t matter. They’re dead. They’re not making the playoffs. It’s an impossibility.”
The Yankees had a chance to chip away at their deficit in the Wild Card race, and instead fell further behind with the dominant Braves now on deck. Gio expects Atlanta to all but bury the Yanks, and end their streak of seven straight postseason appearances.
“Zero percent. Maybe you say one, because anything is possible, but they can’t do anything well enough to go on a run,” Gio said. “There’s just no way.
“They’re not healthy enough, they can’t hit, everybody is old and slow.”
