The Yankees improved to 6-14 in August with a big won over the Nationals Wednesday night, hours after GM Brian Cashman called this season so far “a disaster.”
C-Lo played a lot of that audio Thursday for Gio & Jerry, the latter of whom believes that the Yankees’ GM is indeed embarrassed by what is almost certain at this point to be his worst season at the helm.
“His one comment where he said there were a lot of seasons he’s proud of, but this isn’t one of them?” Jerry said. “He seemed very embarrassed by it.”
“He’s done stuff like this before, where he says ‘we suck right now’ and things like that, but this is the first time they’ve really said this season is a failure,” Gio replied. “That’s new, but what really needs to be new is the philosophy in the offseason, and bringing in productive players who don’t die off within a year of obtaining them.”
Gio said that Cashman’s presser was a “wave the white flag” type of conference, which is something fans have kind of been waiting for…but the Nationals were 20-10 in their last 30 going into Wednesday, and if the Yankees can do that, like the 1995 team did down the stretch?
“A team like the Mariners, they’re like 20-5 in their last 25. You do that, you’re right back in this thing, but there they were yesterday calling it a lousy season like they don’t even believe it,” Jerry said.
Counting Wednesday, a 20-5 stretch would leave the Yankees 80-70 with 12 to go…but the difference is that it seems like, as Jerry also said, the Yankees don’t even believe they can do that.
“They know they’re not good enough,” Gio said, with Jerry firing back that “yes, that’s the admission, that this was done now as opposed to when it’s really over.”
