Gio: Nothing 'sacred' about Yankee pinstripes that makes them immune from advertising

The Yankees announced a new signature partnership with Starr Insurance on Wednesday, which will include the team’s first-ever sponsorship path on their jersey sleeves, leading many fans to fume at the iconic pinstripes being dressed up with ads.

Gio says those fans need to come back to reality.

“Of course, because it’s the Yankees and everybody believes the Yankee uniform is more sacred than the other uniforms, people were losing their minds,” Gio said. “This is where we are in pro sports, and the Yankees are no different. There is not a difference between the Yankee jerseys and other jerseys in 2023. Everybody uses this opportunity to make money. The Yankees, once they switched over to Nike and added the Nike swoosh, all of a sudden this sacred jersey already had something on it. Now you’re slapping on a sponsor just like most teams.”

Soon, all MLB teams will likely have advertising patches, as teams like the Mets, Red Sox, and Padres already do as well, and Gio says the Yankees, despite their storied tradition, are no different than those clubs, as the main objective for all of them is to make money, and this new partnership will reportedly net the franchise roughly $20 million per season.

“If you’re someone who goes to games, pays $50 for parking, the hundreds of dollars for tickets, $18 for a beer and $24 for a cheeseburger,” Gio said. “And you’re surprised that the Yankees are gonna find a way to make more money, then you’re nuts. You just gotta get over it.”
