Gio couldn’t believe the litany of mistakes the Yankees made to doom themselves in Wednesday’s game five, which seemed to be set on ending as an easy Yankee victory that would have only led to more whispers about potential World Series history.
The way the game started compared to how that top of the fifth ended was so drastically different, and represented one of the biggest momentum swings and self-inflicted choke jobs Gio has ever seen.
“Everything was working out,” Gio said. “All the things we talked about that would make you believe the Yankees could come back from down 3-0...this was it. They’re ready to back to LA.
“And then the fifth inning happens, one of the most inexcusable, embarrassing pathetic performances in a World Series that will be seared into the brains of Yankee fans forever.”
The pain is still plenty fresh for Yankee fans after that fifth inning collapse, and Gio says it likely won’t go away any time soon, even if the odds were that the Dodgers would have still wound up winning the series in Los Angeles.
“Now, they weren't going to come back and win this series because nobody's done it. It was a very slim chance,” Gio said. “But to go out like that on your home turf and, by the way, regain the lead and blow that too?
“You could not write a worse story for the Yankees to end their season.”
