Gio and Jerry were talking about big weekend plans during Friday’s show, and Gio joked that those plans might lead him to sleepwalking into Monday’s show, struggling to keep his eyes open.
It kind of reminded him about watching the Yankees.
“Speaking of one eye open, that’s how I watch the Yankees,” Gio said. “Because I’m generally falling asleep watching them, because they are one of the most boring teams in baseball.”
Aside from the anticipation of Miguel Cabrera’s bid for 3,000 career hits, there was little reason to stay awake on Thursday afternoon, when the Yanks were shut out for the third time already this season, spoiling a chance to sweep the lowly Tigers who were without Javy Baez. Instead, it was another day of frustration and wasted opportunities with runners on base, and another three hours of boredom for Gio.
“I don’t know how it’s gonna get better,” Gio said. “It’s really a pattern with them. That’s what I fear for this season.”
Watching the offense labor to score runs against mediocre pitching for a full season would be a nightmare for Yankee fans, and what’s worse, at least in Gio’s eyes, is the potential for things to get even worse if the all-too familiar injury bug heads to the Bronx for its seemingly annual bite.
“You think about the injuries that’s are to come with the Yankees, because they always do,” Gio said. “Whether it’s Hicks, whether it’s Stanton, whether it’s Judge…the team is 7-6, fine, but they’re poorly constructed, they don’t have an edge or a chip on their shoulder, and they’re just not a fun product to watch right now.”
