Gio Urshela leaves game, has MRI on knee

The Yankees lost Thursday’s series finale against the Astros, and now they hope they haven’t lost their third baseman.

Gio Urshela had to leave Thursday’s game in the eighth inning after making a diving stop on a hard grounder off the bat of Aledmys Diaz, but threw the ball away at first to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Urshela stayed down on one knee after the throw, but stayed in the game for two more batters before he was replaced by Tyler Wade.

Aaron Boone told reporters after the game that Urshela was headed for an MRI on his knee.

“He’s getting an MRI now, so well know more in the next couple hours,” Boone said. “He was stable when they put him through the first couple knee tests here inside, but we’ll know more later.”

Urshela looked to be limping when he came off the field in the eighth during a pitching change, and was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk before being forced to leave the game. Urshela has consistently been one of the Yankees’ top defenders while putting together another strong offensive season, coming into Thursday batting .276 with four home runs and a 121 OPS+.

“He’s not sure if it was on the dive or when he rolled to throw, but obviously it stiffened up on him pretty good,” Boone said. “Gio is obviously a big part of what we do, so hopefully it’s nothing too serious.”

Aaron Hicks, who appeared to be coming out of his slump with a multi-hit game, also looked hobbled in the eighth inning after reaching on an infield single in the bottom half of the eighth. He was seen stretching out his leg at first base and stayed in the game, but Boone said he was just dealing with cramping in both legs.
