Gio: Where is credit for Aaron Boone when Yankees are rolling if he is ripped when team struggles?
As the Yankees flounder and fall further behind in the AL East standings, many fans are once again calling for a change at manager, leading to a news flash from Gio.
Gio says Yankee fans need to realize that Boone is rarely, if ever, credited when things are going well in the Bronx, but when things are looking bleak, the kneejerk reaction is to bring out the torches for the skipper.
“When the Yankees are rolling like they were in the beginning of the season, was there a single person who called up and said we have to give Aaron Boone credit for what’s going on?” Gio said.
“Not a single person called. It was all Juan Soto, and Judge is healthy, and look at Luis Gil. Now they’re in this freefall, and he needs to be fired in the mind of Yankee fans.”
For those fans wanting Boone gone, including callers who vented to Boomer and Gio on Monday morning, Gio said that fans need to realize that a change at manager likely wouldn’t do much for the Yankees, simply because the manager doesn’t have much impact on how well, or poorly, the team is playing.
“Aaron Boone has been around for a long time now. He doesn’t have that much of an impact on the team,” Gio said. “I’m sorry to break it to you. There are only a couple managers who really have proven that they can turn a team around or the team plays and represents the personality of their manager…Aaron Boone, he’s just along for the ride. If the players play well, he’s there and has their back. If they’re playing poorly, he’s there and has their back, he gets thrown out five or six times a season, and that’s it.”
