Gio doesn’t need a crystal ball to predict how the Yankees offseason is going to go. He has years of evidence that makes it easy to predict how it will all go down.
“If they don’t make the playoffs, or they squeak in and got knocked out, I’m telling you what’s gonna happen. I just know it,” Gio said. “They’re gonna say, ‘We missed out best player for three quarters of the season, and we know we’re not as bad as we were record-wise. The division was really good, we caught some bad breaks, and we’re gonna bring this team back and try to do it again.’ and, as we hear these reports that they want to get under the luxury tax, I don’t see them spending a lot of money in the offseason.”
To make things worse, even if the Yankees did a 180 and looked to overhaul the roster after this season, Gio doesn’t believe they would even be able to make that happen.
“What can they do?” Gio said. “Giancarlo Stanton. Locked in. They’re not gonna be able to get rid of him…DJ LeMahieu, he’s got another two years after this year. With the way he’s playing and his recent injury history, do you think anyone’s gonna want him? You just signed Anthony Rizzo. You got him next year for another $17 million…the Yankees aren’t gonna get rid of them, because they can’t.
“They have hung onto guys for way too long, and they’ve shown an unwillingness to part with players.”
Still, Gio believes his initial prediction will prevail, simply because the Yankees are not based in reality when assessing their roster.
“They’re completely delusional about who they are…they are delusional,” Gio said. “Hal Steinbrenner? Delusional. Brian Cashman? Delusional about who they are and where they are. I really don’t believe that they look at these guys as problems as much as we do.”
