The Yankees somehow still have the best bullpen ERA in the league, but lately, the team’s biggest strength has started to show some significant cracks.
On Sunday, the Yanks became the first team in franchise history to blow two leads of two runs or more in the eighth inning or later, falling to the lowly Rockies, and then the struggling Michael King served up a game-tying home run to Shohei Ohtani in the eighth inning of Monday’s loss to the Angels.
The sudden struggles of the bullpen have Boomer concerned.
“What happened to their bullpen?” Boomer said. “I remember three weeks ago, their bullpen was the best in baseball.”
Tommy Kahnle shouldn’t have been expected to continue his scoreless streak to start the season, but other top relievers like King, Ron Marinaccio, and Nick Ramirez have regressed of late, and Gio says it is simply a product of pitchers coming back down to their normal levels of production after collectively playing over their heads for the first few months of the season.
“You know what they call that? Regression to the mean,” Gio said. “That’s what they call that. They were pitching out of their asses for a while there, and now, they’re coming back to earth.”
