Nestor Cortes once again saw his efficiency take a drastic decline on Tuesday night, cruising through four shutout innings until allowing two runs in the fifth, ending his night and leaving his season ERA at 5.16.
Cortes has struggled badly facing opponents a third time through the order this season, and Gio says the Bombers are in big trouble if the lefty can’t get back to his 2022 form.
“They’re gonna need him desperately,” Gio said. “This team is not anything near what they were last year without him.
“You can count on Gerrit Cole, but outside of him, you got [Domingo] German and [Luis] Severino.”
Boomer pointed out that both German and Severino have been solid for the Yankees so far this season, but Gio isn’t putting faith in pitchers like Severino, who have battled injuries for years.
“Sure,” Gio said. “Same with Josh Donaldson, Harrison Bader, Giancarlo Stanton, all those guys. Once they all get past their injuries…”
