Gio says Yankees, as a franchise, 'feel like they're stuck in neutral'

Monday was the first chance Boomer & Gio had to weigh in on Friday’s Yankees press conferences…and, well, suffice to say they were not exactly enthralled.

“The Yankees’ press conferences were just completely dead,” Gio said. “Complete dead nothing excuse-fest that doesn’t make you feel like they’re going to do anything differently because they love their process and everyone is coming back.”

Gio was also incredulous and thought it was “weird” that Brian Cashman is doing his job without a contract right now, and then went in on Aaron Boone’s demeanor.

“Boone’s up there doing his little cough thing and stuttering, with his ‘ums’ and ‘I means,’” Gio said, “and it feels like the franchise is just stuck in neutral.”

Which, according to Gio, is a surprise, at least to him – but it will be no surprise if the Yankees fail again in 2023 and beyond as a result.

“I really thought there would be enough of a disappointment from what happened, being swept and looking like that, that there would be some sort of accountability there, and it has not happened,” Gio said. “They’re just going to go for it again, and try it again, and probably get beat again by a better team in the playoffs, because they’re just not good enough the way they’re built.”

Just another reason to prove Boomer’s point that Aaron Judge’s free agency decision should be solely about the money.

“Forget about the Yankees for a second – if it’s the Dodgers and the Giants, and the Giants are say $2 million per year more, what is he doing?” Boomer asked. “I go back to the point that he owes it to every other player to get the maximum contract. It’s not about legacy or pinstripes or Monument Park; as romantic as those things are, the reality is that it’s about the money.”
