Gleyber Torres cleared to return to Yankees, could play as soon as Wednesday

The Yankees got back some infield help on Tuesday with the return of Rougned Odor, and more help is on the way.

Aaron Boone told reporters on Tuesday that Gleyber Torres has been cleared by the joint committee after testing positive for COVID-19 last week, and will head to Texas to join the team on Tuesday night.

Torres could be activated as soon as Wednesday. The Yanks are in the middle of a four-game set with the Rangers in Texas.

Since Torres was fully vaccinated earlier in the season, he did not have to stay on the COVID IL for the full 10 days, instead needing two consecutive negative test results before returning to play. He had been asymptomatic since testing positive and was quarantining in Tampa, where the breakout of breakthrough positives began for the Yanks, impacting several coaches, with Torres being the only player affected.

The 24-year-old has struggled at the plate this season, batting .234 with one home run.

The Yanks also received good injury news from Zack Britton, who was sent to see a doctor after reporting general soreness following his simulated game earlier this week. His visit with the doctor “checked out well,” per Boone, and the lefty reliever can resume throwing this weekend.

Britton has yet to pitch this season after undergoing elbow surgery during spring training.
