Gleyber Torres is a free agent at the end of this season, but he told reporters in Tampa on Wednesday that he doesn’t want to go anywhere.
“I feel at home right now…I want to be a Yankee for life,” Torres said. “That’s my goal. We’ll see what happens.”
Torres has heard his name come up in trade rumors multiple times in recent years, but it never amounted to a move. In the meantime, he was the most productive Yankee outside of Aaron Judge last season, as he continues to try and find his star level that he hasn’t reached since 2019, his second year in the majors.
Torres hasn’t known a franchise other than the Yanks since making his big-league debut, and he wants to keep it that way. But those talks may have to wait until free agency, as he told reporters that while he is open to hearing extension talks during the season, he prefers to keep his focus on the field in 2024.
“As a player, you never want to leave from your house. I’m in a good spot,” Torres said. “I know it’s a free agent year, but I don’t think too much about it. I just think about how I can be better and help my team.
“After the season, I hope I can get a conversation with the team.”
