Gleyber Torres saw the trade rumors involving his name this offseason, to the point where he cut himself off from social media.
Still, the former All-Star is still with the Yankees, and even as questions rise regarding his future with the franchise, he hopes to stay in New York.
“I feel like this is my home and for sure I don’t want to leave,” Torres told reporters at spring training on Wednesday, via Greg Joyce of the New York Post. “This year and next year, I just want to put up really good numbers and try to stay all my career with the Yankees. At the end of the day, it’s a business and we don’t know anything about the future.”
Torres is still arbitration eligible next year and won’t be a free agent until 2025, but he still hasn’t found nearly the type of production he had in his first two seasons with the Yankees, and with promising infield prospects inching closer to the majors, Torres could be seen as expendable. For now, Aaron Boone says he still sees Torres as an everyday contributor, and even though he may soon face heat for his job from within, Torres plans to help prospects like Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza find their way in the majors.
“I think as a player, at any moment you know there’s going to be a younger guy coming for your spot,” Torres said. “I feel good because I know in the Yankees’ future there’s really good players to play for the team and do a really good job for us…If I’m here, I’ll try to help them. If not, I don’t know. It’s something I don’t think too much about.”
