Hal Steinbrenner: Days of Yankees spending way to championships are over

The Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009, when the team splurged in free agency with two massive additions in CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeria, while also adding Nick Swisher and A.J. Burnett.

But Hal Steinbrenner said the days of spending their way to a title are over.

“If there is a notion you can spend a gazillion dollars and it’s gonna get you a championship, those days are over,” Steinbrenner said, via the New York Post. “The competitive balance in this game is significantly better than it was 10 or 15 years ago.”

Steinbrenner, speaking at Tuesday’s owners meetings, noted the Dodgers and their free-spending ways that have landed them Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, but even after a 111-win season, they were quickly bounced in the NLCS.

So, while Steinbrenner has made clear his desire to sign Aaron Judge, and won’t let that stop him from making other moves, he doesn’t believe the Yankees can just throw money at their championship drought problem.

“We get a lot of comparisons to them,” Steinbrenner said of the Dodgers.
“They put a lot of money in their payroll every year. How many World Series have they won in the last 10-15 years? It’s tough. Winning a championship is tough. I’m not making excuses. It probably sounds that way, but if you look at it objectively, it’s tough.”
