Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters that a contract extension offer was coming for Aaron Judge, and that offer reportedly arrived last weekend.

According to Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman, appearing on MLB Network’s Hot Stove on Thursday, the Yanks have offered the superstar outfielder an extension in the range of $30 million per season. For context, that would give Judge the second-highest AAV on the team, behind only Gerrit Cole, who is making $36 million in 2022. Giancarlo Stanton is making $29 million, per Spotrac.

"They were expected to make an offer, and I believe they did so last weekend," Heyman said. "My understanding is they're willing to pay in the range of $30 million a year maybe over, but the years are going to be a question, and my belief is they're not going to want to go near [Mike] Trout and [Mookie] Betts."

Per Heyman, the Yanks want to keep an extension around six or seven years, the latter of which would take Judge through his age 37 season. The three-time All-Star turns 30 next month, older than both Trout and Betts were when they signed their massive extensions.

Locking up Judge, who could become a free agent at the end of the 2022 season, has been a priority for the Yanks. He has been the team’s most valuable player since his historic rookie season in 2017, is the face of the franchise, and temporarily quieted injury concerns by playing in 148 games last season. The two sides couldn’t agree on a number for the upcoming season before the arbitration deadline, reportedly $4 million apart, but a hearing can be avoided if an extension is agreed upon.

Judge has said that once Opening Day arrives, he would keep his focus on the season, though he recently indicated that negotiations could continue, but he would no longer discuss it with the media. Opening Day is just a week away.
