Morash: How can Hal Steinbrenner justify keeping Aaron Boone if Yankees flop against Red Sox?
As the Yankees get set for an important series against the surging Red Sox on Friday night, Morash says it is crucial that the Yankees show up this weekend, though he isn’t holding out hope that it will happen after being swept by the Reds at home.
“I don’t see where it’s getting fixed,” Morash said. “And now, in come the red-hot Red Sox…to show how far my bar has been lowered, I’m not even asking for a series win at this point. I guess I should assume my only hope for things truly getting fixed won’t be until after the All-Star break when this team gets a reset.”
If Morash’s greatest fears are realized, and the Yanks are swept by Boston in the Bronx, then he says it’s time for a managerial change, and he wouldn’t wait to do it.
“If the Red Sox come into Yankee Stadium…and they now sweep the Yankees, I don’t know how Hal Steinbrenner justifies keeping Aaron Boone employed,” Morash said. “I love Aaron Boone…but at some point, something with the culture of this team has to change.
“Aaron Boone, as much as I defend him, we have seen managers accomplish far more and already be fired than Aaron Boone.”
Morash noted the 2022 Phillies, who fired Joe Girardi, and this year’s Oilers, as two recent teams in sports who fired their manager/head coach and responded with runs to the championship. He would rather the Yanks turn things around and Boone sticks around, but if it doesn’t happen this weekend, then it might be time for a change.
