Carton & Roberts: Inexcusable that George Steinbrenner is not in Hall of Fame

After welcoming Al Leiter to the show to talk about his upcoming induction into the Mets Hall of Fame, Carton and Roberts broadened the view to take a look at the Baseball Hall of Fame, and one glaring omission.

Evan can’t believe George Steinbrenner has not been inducted after being at the helm for seven World Series titles with the Yankees over the span of four decades.

“You know who Tom Yawkey is? Hall of famer,” Evan said, noting the Red Sox former owner. “Charlie Comiskey, Hall of Famer.”

Craig pointed out that Steinbrenner’s reputation may play a role, as he had a knack for making enemies with some of his ownership tactics, and infamously received a lifetime ban from baseball after attempting to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield. But Evan said some of the owners in Cooperstown have far greater blemishes.

“Tom Yawkey was a racist who kept a lot of worthy baseball players from playing for his franchise,” Evan said. “It was his decision, and the Red Sox embarrassed themselves as a franchise because they were led by him. I’m not getting him out of the Hall of Fame, I’m not pulling him out. I’m just saying, can we be serious here?”

The era ballot voters have seemingly not allowed themselves to look past Steinbrenner’s suspensions, despite being one of the most impactful owners in baseball history. Craig and Evan agree that it is a travesty.

“He should have been a first ballot Hall of Famer,” Craig said.
