As the Yankees dropped their ninth straight game on Tuesday night, Aaron Judge labored through an 0-for-4 effort in which he struck out three times for the second straight game.
Judge, now posting a mediocre .750 OPS in the month of August, hasn’t been anything close to the star he was before his toe injury in early June, and Jerry says the captain deserves some criticism for not helping the Yanks out of their prolonged offensive funk, which has sunk them out of the playoff race and deep into last place in the AL East.
“We are at Aug. 23, and Aaron Judge, in the month of August, has six RBI,” Jerry said. “You’re gonna tell me if Judge didn’t have a hot month of August, this wouldn’t be different?
“He’s getting paid $40 million a year to be a difference maker, and he’s been horrid.”
A caller countered that Judge’s struggles are due to him pushing through his toe injury, but Jerry says if Judge is on the field and playing every day, he should be contributing more than he has to this point, as the team’s superstar and leader.
“The guy that’s here, that is supposed to make the difference, is not making a difference,” Jerry said. “If you want to have the conversation that he’s not healthy, and shouldn’t be on the field, then get him off the damn field, get him healthy for next year. I agree with that. But any athlete will tell you, ‘If I’m out there, there’s no excuses.’ All I see is a guy who has not performed.”
