Gleyber Torres went deep against the Nationals on Monday night, making it six straight games that the new leadoff man has reached base, and 20th game overall that Torres has reached safely.
It has been an overall rough contract year for Torres, but he has looked better of late, batting .296 with a respectable .778 OPS in the months of August, and Jerry and C-Lo agree that it is a very good sign for the Yankees, who have been desperate to find some consistency in front of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.
“It’s a big improvement from where he was at and what they were getting out of the leadoff spot from other guys, so if he’s going well, leave him there until he’s not,” Jerry said. “Any time he’s on base ahead of Soto and Judge, that’s a good thing.”
Torres has a hit in six straight games, and is only one year removed from being the Yankees’ best offensive player outside of Aaron Judge. If he can recapture that level of production, the first half of the Yankee order suddenly becomes even more formidable.
“If he reaches safely in the first inning and doesn’t get on base again,” C-Lo said. “That’s something.”
