September 1 is Thursday, meaning there will be just five weeks left in the MLB season…and do we know what the Yankees really are?
Sal Licata and Jerry Recco sure don’t.
“What is this Yankees team though? We still don’t really know, do we?” Sal asked Monday. “They look great against the Mets, you think they’re getting back on track, then they go out and lose the last two games of that series in Oakland.”
“If you told me they’d be one and done in the playoffs, I wouldn’t be surprised – and if you told me they’re playing in the World Series, I wouldn’t be surprised,” Jerry responded. “This team specifically has had so many enormous highs and some very odd lows – not that this weekend was one of those, but Saturday and Sunday were very disappointing.”
It’s understandable to lose one game in a four-game series, even to an inferior opponent as Oakland seems to be – as Jerry said, “in a four-game set, you’re allowed one crappy game.”
The problem? The Yankees had two crappy games worth of games in a three-day span, and never recovered fully on Sunday as the A’s took a series split.
That, to Sal, is the issue.
“If you get one, whatever, don’t have to sweep, because you have to be realistic,” he said. “Fans want to win every game, but even if the Yankees got one hit on Sunday, we wouldn’t be complaining if they only lost one game.”
