Jerry: These Yankees may be best since early 2000s, finding new ways to win every night

The Yankees took down the upstart Royals on the road in Monday’s series opener on the backs of nine singles, a safety squeeze by DJ LeMahieu, and dominant pitching from Carlos Rodon and the bullpen.

For Jerry, it was another example of how this team has a special feel to it, and is able to pull out wins even when several starters are getting the night off.

“If they can win games like they did last night, it just adds another dynamic to this team, in the way they do win games, onto what might be the best Yankee team I’ve seen since the early 2000s,” Jerry said. “The Royals are a really good team this year, specifically at home…and you’ve got no Judge…and the way they won that game was by moving guys over, moving guys around, bunting the baseball, and really good pitching.”

On a night where Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and the struggling Anthony Rizzo were all on the bench, and with Anthony Volpe going 0-for-5, the Yanks still got the job done, with Jose Trevino, LeMahieu, and Alex Verdugo providing the offense in a game where the lineup was so shorthanded, Gleyber Torres was batting third.

“It was a nice, tidy 4-2 win for a team that is continuing to find new ways to win games,” Jerry said.
